School Pupils Urged to Go Green - For the Chance to Win a Science Grant

Price comparison firm Love Energy Savings has made £500 science grants available to school children who come up with the best ideas on how to save and conserve energy.

School Pupils Urged to Go Green - For the Chance to Win a Science Grant

SCHOOLS children are being encouraged to become green energy champions - for a chance to win a £500 science grant.

Bolton-based price comparison firm Love Energy Savings has launched its first ever Energy Efficiency Competition in a bid to promote the value of energy saving among youngsters.

The contest is open to year 7 and 8 pupils all over the country, who will need to work together to develop an energy efficiency method which could be used at home or in class.

Pupils will need to demonstrate their innovative idea in a poster — no bigger than A3 size — along with a 250-word explainer.

Phil Foster of Love Energy Savings said: “Energy efficiency is massively important, especially for the generations of tomorrow who have to learn to live in a rapidly-changing environment.

“As well as using less water, gas or electricity, efficiency also means having the knowhow to use less energy around the house or classroom.

“Being energy efficient has many benefits from cost savings to a reduction in CO2 emissions – which will help reduce climate change.”

He added: “We hope this competition will encourage schools and pupils to think about energy efficiency in a fun and interesting way.

“It’d be great if some of the entrants were able to actually implement some of their ideas and start doing their bit to save the environment — whether at school or in their everyday lives.

“And there is are 15 great prizes on offer, so getting involved is a no-brainer!

“The lucky winner of the competition will receive a £500 grant for their science department, which can be spent in whatever way they see fit.

“But it’d be great if this could be put towards making a school as energy efficient as possible.”

The top 10 schools will also win a free energy audit from Love Energy Solutions — a report of cost saving measures and improvements to help understand consumption profiles.

As well as the £500 science grant, each member of the winning team will be given a £50 Amazon voucher.

Teams must consist of no more than four pupils, who cannot be a member of more than one team — but schools can enter as many times as they wish.

As well as being original and creative, Love Energy’s specialist team of judges expect the winning entry to show a thorough understanding of energy efficiency and its importance.

Importantly, the entry must be fun, clear and easy to read.

One entrant from each school will be selected for the final round which will be shown on the Love Energy saving’s Facebook page.

Parents, teachers and pupils will then be encouraged to 'like' their favourite poster online — whoever gets the most likes will be crowned the winner.

Registration is now open and schools can sign up by registering their interest at schools@loveenergysavings.com by May 25 — everyone will be sent a competition pack.

The deadline for entries is June 1 at 5pm, the shortlist will be announced on June 8, and the winning entry will be revealed on June 15.

To submit an entry, schools must include the following for each team:

• A poster no more than A3 in size to demonstrate their energy efficiency idea
