Liverpool’s buses are leading the way in sustainability, with all Stagecoach buses in the city now achieving a next-generation emissions standard which makes them one of the greenest fleets in the UK.
The entire Stagecoach fleet that covers Liverpool city centre is equipped to meet the stringent Euro 5 emissions standard requirements as a minimum. Stagecoach Merseyside, Cheshire and South Lancashire has also invested significantly in its fleet to take its sustainability commitment even further - with over 60 per cent of its fleet going beyond Euro 5 to achieve Euro 6.
All Stagecoach buses operating in Liverpool city centre have significantly low levels of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx).The buses also have limited non-methane hydrocarbons in the exhaust – helping to make the air in the city cleaner and less polluted.
Euro 6 vehicles, and those retrofitted to this standard, produce 10 times less nitrogen oxide per litre of fuel than a new diesel-powered car, despite being able to carry 20 times more people, meaning they provide the most practical short-term solution for meeting clean air policies and implementing Clean Air Zones.
All the company’s new vehicles have been built in the UK, helping to provide hundreds of British manufacturing jobs and bolster the economy for smaller businesses in the supply chain as well as reduce the carbon footprint incurred from international shipping.

“Through investment in cleaner engines, renewable fuels, and energy efficient facilities, we are able to provide a service that puts our buses at the heart of the region’s low carbon strategy.”
Buses play a crucial role in tackling environmental issues and helping to meet national targets on improving air quality and reducing emissions. Bus travel is a vital part of the solution to tackling pollution and making our city cleaner for all.
Other green initiatives Stagecoach Merseyside has adopted include a 100 per cent recycling rate meaning everything recyclable from paper and litter left by passengers, to used oils, batteries and the water used to wash the buses every night, is recycled.
