Energy industry companies collaborate to innovate

Ellesmere Port based Energy Innovation Centre (EIC) and the Energy Systems Catapult have signed a landmark agreement to develop and enhance innovation across the energy sector.

The Catapult was set up to support companies and Government in the development of new products and services to address the new commercial opportunities created by the transformation of UK and global energy systems.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Systems Catapult, Philip New commented: “We are really looking forward to working with the EIC and other industry partners to support innovation to the sector. Innovation has a vital role to play if the energy industry is to thrive – innovation across the whole system: technology, business models, operating models, customers and markets”.

The EIC was launched in 2008 to accelerate the discovery, development and deployment of innovation among the transmission and distribution network operators that power homes and businesses across the UK. The EIC supports SMEs and innovators to attract support from the large energy network operators who can help propel their technologies to the next stage.

Denise Massey, the Managing Director of the EIC said of the agreement: \"This is a very exciting partnership for us as it will enhance and expand the scope of our offering to our SME customers. In turn, this will enable us to deliver increased value to the energy network operators who are looking for innovative technologies from these companies.\"

Mr New also commented on the importance of small and medium sized enterprises: “SMEs have a fundamental role to play in originating innovation. The creativity, focus and nimbleness of the best smaller companies makes them a critical part of any innovation ecosystem, so it is logical that we work closely with SMEs, listen to them, and help them  deliver innovation into the sector.”
