3D scanning specialist sets sights on European expansion

3D scanning specialist sets sights on European expansion

""

A groundbreaking Chester scanning firm has enlisted the help of the Cheshire and Warrington Growth Hub as it sets its sights on new accreditation that will allow it to enter the medical and healthcare sector – and compete in the global market.

3D scanning expert Cadscan, which is based in Telford Court, is targeting the prestigious CE Marking to prove its products meet stringent European health and safety standards.

Once the accreditations are secured, the future for Cadscan looks rosy. The company is looking to increase staff numbers from 10 to 15 and boost turnover by more than 60 per cent in the next 12 months alone.

Founded in 2011, Cadscan launched its first prototype product – a desktop scanning system called Cubik®, which is based on its unique DepthPhase® technology – with the help of a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign in 2013.

But six years on, and with the support of the Growth Hub, the team is setting itself lofty targets.

“It’s an incredibly exciting time for our business,” said managing director and founder Dr Alastair Buchanan. “We’re looking to gain some high quality accreditation to make sure we can sell our products in what has become an increasingly competitive sector. That’s a real business priority for us – and the Growth Hub has given us a massive leg up as we try and reach new markets and achieve some pretty ambitious growth targets.

“Our quality management system needs to meet the medical devices standard, ISO 13485 to enable CE Marking of medical products. This shows that our products meet all of the essential requirements of the relevant European health, safety and environmental protection legislation.

“Those quality accreditations and certifications are all important for us and the Growth Hub is helping us to get them.

“We needed support from a specialist ISO consultant, provided by the Growth Hub, who has given the company guidance and a framework to work to in order to try and achieve that ISO accreditation because we had very limited knowledge about doing that ourselves.”

Since that first product launch in 2011, the firm has built up a talented team of software, electronic and product design engineers.

The same team is now working tirelessly on a range of new and innovative products for the healthcare and medical devices sector – but working in that sector means conforming to regulatory standards before a product can reach the market. And that’s where the Growth Hub has come in.

Alastair said: “The Growth Hub has also helped us prioritise the needs of the business and through them we have been able to tap into some of the expert advice offered by the government Department for International Trade.

“The support we’ve received from the Growth Hub has been hugely beneficial because without these accreditations, it’s very difficult for us to grow our business. And we also need them to operate in the global market. We’re working on some fantastic products at the moment so, for us right now, all I’d say is….’watch this space!’”
