Reaping the rewards of home grown talent thanks to Total Excellence Centre

"Every single person at the end of the course had nothing but great feedback for Total Excellence Centre."
Denise Scott, Head of HR at James Briggs Ltd

For some businesses, it’s almost second nature to look outside the company in order to find new recruits who have the necessary skills for a vacant job role. Yet there’s a lot to be said about cultivating staff internally and promoting them when the time is right.

What many companies fail to realise is that there can be significant value in adopting pre-planned, structured training and development programmes, since they’re not only of value to the business as a whole, but are of significant personal benefit to the individual employee.

Local manufacturing company James Briggs Limited is a great example of this in practice. They go to great lengths to train, nurture and retain what they see as their company’s greatest asset.

Embracing workforce development

From their two manufacturing facilities in Oldham and Middleton, British manufacturer James Briggs is one of Europe’s largest consumer chemical companies. They have the capacity to distribute up to 150 million aerosols and 30 million litres of high-performance product every year and supply a wide range of industries including construction, leisure, hygiene and automotive.

As well as being committed to the continuous innovation of their extensive selection of specialist brands, just as much emphasis - if not more - goes into the development of their workforce.

Preparation is key

It was purely coincidental that when David Mercer, Co-Founder of Total Excellence Centre in Astley, contacted James Briggs last year, they were actively seeking a new provider who could create a bespoke training and development programme for their supervisory team.

Denise Scott, Head of Human Resources at James Briggs told us “From our very first meeting with David at Total Excellence, we knew straight away that they were the training provider for us. They were knowledgeable, realistic and had a real understanding of what it was we were looking for and what we needed to achieve as a business.

“Even before a proposal was submitted, our dedicated trainer made a point of scheduling a number of visits to undertake exploratory workshops with our cohort groups. She went to great lengths to really get to know us as a company and even spent time with the delegates to find out what their aspirations were, what they were looking to get out of the training and to address any concerns. It was clear that even during the initial diagnostic phase, strong professional relationships were quickly being forged.

“This phase was invaluable for us and it enabled Total Excellence to tailor the course specifically to the needs of our company as well as to the requirements of each individual.”

Although James Briggs had, of course, invested resources into staff training in the past, this was the first time they’d ever introduced a programme of this magnitude.

Training with purpose

Operations Manager, Bill Howson, insisted that they needed a professionally accredited bespoke programme, which would give all 24 members of their supervisory team the key skills needed to confidently take the next step within the business and embrace their first line management role.

Denise continued “Pretty much all of our supervisors had been promoted from within and came off the production line, without any formal training whatsoever. Some had been in their roles for long periods of time, whilst others had only been promoted during the previous 18 months; so it was a real mixed bag of competencies.

“We saw this training programme as an opportunity to not only provide consistency in our own training efforts but also to develop the supervisory team sufficiently enough so that each individual had more confidence in their day to day role. The fact that it was a professionally accredited ILM Level 3 course was a real bonus and actually gave each delegate the drive to succeed.”

Supporting SME’s in the Greater Manchester area and beyond

As an ILM-accredited centre, Total Excellence Centre offers an extensive range of accredited, endorsed and non-accredited learning and development programmes to organisations, throughout the UK.

Their “engaging, enabling and highly effective” programmes have already helped hundreds of SMEs achieve and often supersede their business growth objectives.

Delegate success

The first module of James Briggs’ individually tailored ILM Level 3 Supervisory Management programme commenced in September 2016 and ended in April 2017.

To say that the management team at James Briggs are delighted with the outcome is an understatement “Every single person at the end of the course had nothing but great feedback for everyone at Total Excellence.” said Denise. “The enthusiasm and passion that our trainer had for what she was delivering was outstanding and the level of interest she showed in each individual delegate went way beyond our expectations.”

They’re so delighted in fact that they’re now looking to progress the next phase of their training strategy by implementing an additional programme for middle management – Managing People and Performance.
