Buyers from USA showing interest in work of northern artist

A Lake District artist who specialises in animal portraits is finding that visitors from overseas - including the USA - are buying her work

Her sheep and cattle are seen all over the Lake District but now one of Thuline de Cock’s Friesian cows is on its way to Washington DC.

On canvas, that is, for artist Thuline creates paintings of animals which are gaining a wide fan base.

The painting of the Friesian was a special commission for the visitors from the USA who called in at Thuline’s Kendal studio this summer.

“They saw one of the big black and white faces and said to me, We want one like this, but much bigger than the original,” said Thuline.

The result was a much larger than usual canvas, but Thuline, who hails from Belgium originally but has been based in the Lakes for many years, is getting used to unusual requests.

“I’ve just done a painting of a Friesian cow which was commissioned by a woman as a wedding present for her husband, a farmer, in Devon. She sent a photo of his favourite cow for me to paint.”

But Thuline’s greatest effort this year involved a sheep, one of the Go Herdwick fantasy flock which decorated the central Lakes this summer. She painted Beatrix, the glass-reinforced plastic sheep which stood from Easter till last month outside the Cedar Manor Hotel in Windermere.

Last weekend the entire flock was auctioned, raising a staggering total of more than £275,000 for the Calvert Trust charity, and Thuline was thrilled to see Beatrix fetch the second highest price, of £5000. “But I’m now in mourning,” she said. “I grew very fond of her and would go to Windermere regularly to see her. But I’m very pleased that she’s been sold to a family who have a house in the Lakes and I know that she’s gone to a good home.”
