On Saturday 13th January 2017 just after 0200 UTC The Four Oarsmen made rowing history.

NRL proudly supports The Four Oarsmen into world record rowing history

George Biggar, Dicky Taylor, Peter Robinson and Stuart Watts arrived into English Harbour in Antigua to be crowned the 2017 winners of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic challenge – taking just 29 days, 14 hours and 34 minutes to cross from The Canary Islands to Antigua.

This incredible time saw them not only win the 2017 race, but set two new records. The amateur rowers beat the previous year’s winners by 6 days to set a new race record for the four-crew challenge. They also spectacularly broke the world record for the fastest ever team crossing across the Atlantic.

Despite having very little experience of rowing, the team set out on a mission to raise money for two causes very close to their hearts – Mind mental health charity and Spinal Research UK.

George Biggar wanted to do something ‘in style’ to commemorate his late mother who struggled with mental health issues throughout her life, choosing to support Mind who his mother was a local trustee for. Peter Robinson wanted to raise money to fund Spinal Research following a close friend’s rugby accident that left him with life changing injuries.

Whilst undertaking a challenging training schedule the team’s continued fundraising efforts raised over £250,000 for their two charities before the race had even began. This total continues to climb as news of their victory spreads across the UK and the globe.

As a result of the sheer effort, hard-work and dedication the team put into this incredible achievement, NRL have decided to increase their support for the world-record holders and the charities they are championing. The recruitment company’s previous £15,000 donation is now being increased to £25,000 in recognition of The Four Oarsmen’s amazing feat.

Commenting on the incredible achievement NRL’s CEO Andrew Redmayne said:

“What The Four Oarsmen have achieved is absolutely remarkable. The dedication, perseverance and team work they have showed in rowing so relentlessly across the Atlantic has been humbling to watch.

We’re privileged to have been able to sponsor them and share their journey, and see the unbelievable amount of money they have raised for their charities. Everyone at NRL is extremely proud of their tremendous, well-earned achievement.”
