New Appointments Take Choice To The Next Generation

Family owned Choice Hotels is keeping it in the family with the appointment of two members of the next generation to work in the business.

Tom, 26 and Victoria, 23, son and daughter of board director Robert Nelder,join as trainee managers and are gaining valuable experience in every aspect of the hotel industry, as they work towards becoming fully fledged managers.

As part of the trainee management programme, the pair are filling their days learning everything from housekeeping to working in the kitchen. Tom comments: “At the moment we are shadowing each position at the hotel to help us to develop our knowledge and to also offer a fresh perspective on current processes.”

Choice is an independent family owned business which had humble beginnings when it opened its first guest house almost 70 years ago. Today its management team boasts more than 360 years’ experience in the industry and seven members of the family work at the company. The chain has a portfolio of five hotels ranging from family, adult only to country house hotels.

Both Victoria and Tom already have some experience working in the leisure sector. Tom was previously head chef at Twelve in Thornton and has an NVQ Level 2 in catering and hospitality. He is hoping to use these skills to revitalise menus and see if restaurant processes can be transferred across to hotel catering.

And this isn’t the first time Victoria has been drafted into help with the family business either. Victoria adds: “I used to work in the reservations department before I was asked to join the management training scheme. I really enjoy working with Tom, I think we bring a fresh perspective to the company as well as a new zest for eventually growing the business.”

Both are looking forward to the future which will see the hotel chain appoint morefamily members to ensure it is family-owned for years to come.Tom commented: “We are both very lucky to work with close family. It offers a really strong support network and helps us to achieve our goals.

“Choice is known for its commitment to staff and for providing excellent holidays to those who stay with us which is something we’re both keen to build upon. We have families who have been coming here for years and are now bringing their children and grandchildren to enjoy the facilities we have to offer.”

Victoria adds: “We have already learnt so much from the staff, particularly at The Cliffs Hotel, and we are looking forward to working with other Choice employees so we can learn from the wealth of experience that lies within the company. Every day is different, there isn’t time for clock watching and we take on new challenges every day.”
