A new mindfulness excursion aimed at boosting the wellbeing of its users is being trialled in Blackpool.
Staff at The Blackpool Tower Dungeon are using ferrets to help encourage more of its visitors to venture outdoors and make new friends.
On Monday, customers visiting the scarily funny actor-led attraction on Blackpool’s promenade were able to cuddle and play with the racing ferrets as well as take the four-legged animals on a walk along the famous Blackpool promenade.
It is hoped that the activity will decrease stress in participants but also encourage people to lead a more active lifestyle.
The Blackpool Tower Dungeon worked with Fuzz Fest Ferret Racing team, a North West-based ferret events company, to ensure it was ethical for the animals taking part and that they would come to no harm.
The ferret team work with charities and groups all over the North of England, helping to raise thousands of pounds each year for their participants.
Mindfulness excursions are a growing trend in the UK with wellbeing becoming an important part of culture. The NHS lists being active and connecting with people as some of the ways people can boost their own wellbeing.
As well as improving wellbeing, the activity was also about changing perceptions of ferrets. Often neglected for a traditional cat or dog, ferrets are friendly creatures and make a great family pet.
Kenny Mew, general manager at The Blackpool Tower Dungeon, said: “The Dungeon brand is all about having fun and not taking things too seriously. We want our customers to have some respite from a world dominated by politics and just have a good time with cute animals.
“That’s why we’re looking at running more of these ferret workshops. If they prove successful, we’ll definitely look at rolling out more of these sorts of activities for our customers to enjoy.”
There are currently many ferrets looking a new home. Those interested in adopting a ferret should visit www.southcheshireferretrescue.co.uk.
Andy Guile, owner of Fuzz Fest Ferret Racing Team, added: “We were delighted to be asked by The Blackpool Tower Dungeon team to showcase what wonderful animals ferrets are. Not only are they great companions but also very playful and loyal.
“Hopefully this activity will show that they are great option for anyone looking a pet.”
The Blackpool Tower Dungeon is open daily from 10:30am. For more information about tickets, visit www.thedungeons.com/blackpool.
