Bold Decisions Set to Reap Rewards for One of Citys Oldest Law Firms

"We took bold and brave decisions to invest heavily into the business at a time of looming recession when many firms are sitting back and taking stock."
Chris Bishop, managing partner, Slater Heelis

Law firm Slater Heelis is predicting continued steady growth after significant new hires and a strong half year performance especially in the private client, court of protection, family and employment teams.

The firm with offices on Deansgate Manchester, Sale and Timperley is one of the oldest in Manchester and can trace its origins back almost 250 years.

Speaking on its half-year performance, managing partner Chris Bishop said: “Despite the ongoing economic uncertainty fuelled by Brexit and the upcoming general election and as a result of the investments we have made into the business over the past six months, we are still predicting growth this year.

“We took bold and brave decisions to invest heavily into the business at a time of looming recession when many firms are sitting back and taking stock.

“These decisions are already reaping rewards and we are now set to capitalise when some clarity prevails over the corporate landscape post-election.”

Key hires over the past year include Jim Tully into the corporate team, Jonathan Kay adding strength to the commercial property, Elizabeth Wilkinson as head of dispute resolution and the establishment of a new crime and regulatory department headed up by Rachel Fletcher.

Chris said: “The talent we have attracted will take us into new markets and will prove a match for the large city firms.

“The fact high profile, vastly experienced lawyers have the confidence to move to us when it would be understandable to sit tight in the current climate demonstrates our ambitious intent. Establishing a new crime department is a bold move which we are excited about.”

One thing which is set to remain constant is the Slater Heelis culture.

Chris added: “Going forward our purpose remains to meet the aims and aspirations of all people working for the company. We want to remain a happy place to work - laughter is essential - and we hope to grow and for more people, employees and clients, to benefit from that experience.

“We have set ourselves tough challenges, applying many markers across diversity and inclusion, mental well-being and sustainability, all of which align with our sense of purpose.”
