Graham Evans MP Visits MBNA HQ in Chester

Graham Evans MP Visits MBNA HQ in Chester

""

Conservative Member of Parliament for Weaver Vale, Graham Evans took the short visit to the MBNA headquarters in Chester during the Whitsun recess as part of his Industry and Parliament Trust (IPT) Fellowship seeking to develop a greater insight into financial services in the UK.

MBNA is the one of the UK’s largest credit card issuers and part of Bank of America, one of the largest financial institutions in the world. The company has been operating in the UK for the last 20 years providing a range of credit cards and working with a diverse range of organisations to provide cards related to sport, charity and much more.

During the visit Graham furthered his understanding of the role a major credit card lender plays within the financial services industry. Graham met with Chief Executive, Ian O’Doherty who gave an overview of MBNA operations, as well as discussing consumer credit and credit risk. Graham also met with MBNA’s Chief Finance Officer Michele Greene, Head of Legal Jackie Barodekar, Customer Risk executive Alan North and Product Marketing executive Thomas Rebel. MBNA is one of Chester’s largest private employers so there was also an opportunity for Graham to meet with a number of his constituents employed at company headquarters.

Graham learnt about MBNA’s role in the community and wider region and met with Communications executive John Greaves (pictured) and others across the bank to understand more about credit lending and the role MBNA plays with regards to financial education, a value core to the company’s corporate ethos. MBNA has won a number of awards over the last few years for its approach to customer service and corporate social responsibility, including its work with Tackling Numbers, a ground-breaking interactive numeracy programme for young children in partnership with Premiership Rugby.

The visit was part of the IPT Fellowship scheme, a programme of placements designed to give MPs and peers a better understanding of a business sector or issue. Graham’s Fellowship aims to examine the UK’s financial services and technology sectors, looking at a broad range of areas including retail and corporate investment, risk, SME and hi-tech business lending, innovation  and approaches to skills. The visit followed on Graham’s time spent with Visa Europe looking at the technology supporting the payments industry.

Graham said, “I was pleased to get an overview of MBNA’s work, as well as discussing consumer credit and credit risk. I was pleased to learn about MBNA’s role in the community and across Cheshire, and to meet with executives from both the legal and credit risk teams. I was interested to hear about their Customer Service and Corporate Social Responsibility, including their work with Tackling Numbers, a ground-breaking interactive numeracy programme for young children.

“It is very important to nurture strong relationships with progressive employers and demonstrate the wealth of great quality employees there are across Weaver Vale and Cheshire.”
