Urmston adds extra sparkle at Christmas

The Christmas Hamper Club

Urmston adds extra sparkle at Christmas

With Christmas just around the corner, the Christmas Hamper Club has been created in Urmston with the aim of looking after families in need in the locality.

Urmston resident Lisa Cooke, who has been a Governor at both Flixton Girls School and St Antony’s College, has worked collaboratively with Trafford Housing Trust, Urmston Partnership, Iceland, the two schools and local businesses, who have all made monetary donations.

The hampers, worth £20 each, are full of fresh meat and vegetables for a Christmas dinner, plus plenty of treats, and will be split equally between Flixton Girls School and St Antony’s College, adding extra sparkle this Christmas.

A total of 80 Christmas hampers have been created, which will be packed by the team at Iceland located in Eden Square.

Lisa Cooke says: “I think it is really important to consider families at this time of year who might not have the same luxuries as everyone else.  The Christmas Hamper Club has been created as a collaboration and I hope the hampers will relieve some of the pressure on families and give their Christmas that extra sparkle this year.”

The idea for the hampers comes on the back of the Sandwich Club project, which was supported by Trafford Housing Trust, Lisa, the two schools and Iceland, feeding 140 children lunch everyday for the duration of the six-week summer holiday.

Lisa continues: “The Sandwich Club project last summer was hugely successful and very much appreciated by the families.  I wanted to build on that, and on behalf of Flixton Girls School and St Antony’s College, I would personally like to thank everyone involved for supporting the Christmas Hamper Club and for making a real difference this Christmas.”

Fay Jackson, Social Investment Manager at Trafford Housing Trust, said: “This can be a difficult time of year for some families, so hopefully these hampers will bring some Christmas cheer.  The Sandwich Club was a big part of our 2019 Active Appetites programme, which supported holiday food and activity projects in Trafford.  Next year we’re doubling the funding so that we can expand the programme to include more holidays and more schools and groups.”

Steve Smith, Area Manager for Iceland, adds: “It has been a real sense of achievement to have worked with Lisa and the various associations in making the lives of local families just a little better this Christmas.  I am really proud of Iceland Urmston team and in particular Amanda, the manageress, in their commitment to make the project work.  I believe it has been a great success and Iceland would love to support future projects in the local community.”

The Christmas Hamper Club is the latest in a number of initiatives from Love Urmston, a new brand that highlights all that is great about Urmston.  For further information, please visit www.loveurmston.co.uk or follow on Facebook and Instagram.
