Duo digs deep for Greater Manchesters City of Trees initiative

"The companys decision to support City of Trees was simple, we wanted to contribute to creating more green space in the city, help address global warming as well as provide something for the school"
Zoe Brimelow, brand director at Duo UK

Manchester-headquartered packaging manufacturer and distributor, Duo UK, has completed a day of green-fingered action investing £5,000 to plant a total of 500 trees as part of its partnership with City of Trees.

The company invited staff and customers to join them at Abbott Community Primary School in Ancoats, to plant a small orchard, as well as trees and shrubs to form a natural partition from the public footpath, after it had cleared dense brambles and foliage on the ground earlier this year.

Representatives from Character World and N Brown Group plc joined Duo UK for the day, planting trees to contribute to City of Tree’s target of 3 million. The charity aims to plant a tree for every person living in Greater Manchester in order to lock up carbon, trap air pollution, reduce flood risk and boost biodiversity.

Zoe Brimelow, brand director at Duo UK, said: “The company’s decision to support City of Trees was simple, we wanted to contribute to creating more green space in the city, help address global warming as well as providing something for the school that will grow with its pupils. We’re proud of everyone’s efforts, helping to create a more sustainable future for the next generation.”

Lorraine Wilson, Global Packaging Lead at N Brown Group plc, said: “Duo invited us to take part in the tree planting day which has been a great success and left our team feeling really inspired. The initiative ties in to our approach to sustainability, all people, one planet, every product. We’re already looking forward to returning next year to see how much the trees have grown and the difference they have made to the school.”

As part of this project 200 sq m of bramble and scrub was removed for the forest school area and, once completed, 640 trees will have been planted. This comprises 100 m of hedgerow along a footpath which borders the school; the creation of 700 sq m of native broadleaved woodland to serve as a buffer between the school playing field, main road and train line,  and 150 sq m of working woodland for materials to be cut for forest school activities.

Kev Wigley, Operations Manager at City of Trees added: “We’re hugely grateful for the contribution from Duo UK in planting trees as part of the Northern Forest, as well as improving green spaces for the next generation.”

As well as transforming underused grounds of the city and addressing environmental issues, Duo UK’s commitment to City of Trees forms part of its own pledge towards meeting Greater Manchester’s carbon-neutral targets by 2038.
