Northcoders launch part-time coding course

Northcoders, based in Manchester, has announced a new part-time six-month course starting in November to make learning to code accessible to more people.

Northcoders launch part-time coding course

"Our aim is to provide much needed tech talent to help assist businesses in the North thrive."
James Brooke, Co-founder of Northcoders

The 25-week long Accelerate Flex programme is a remotely taught full-stack JavaScript course. It is designed to get passionate beginners into entry-level software engineering roles. Northcoders' graduates enjoy an average starting salary of almost £25,000.

Created to help satisfy the rapidly increasing demand for developers in Manchester and the North of England, the course aims to give adults of any age and from any walk of life the opportunity to learn coding to an industry standard level. The flexible nature of the course is designed to fit with those in work or with child care obligations. There will be drop-in sessions three evenings a week and on Saturdays. Student will be free to pick and choose which of these sessions they attend, but are expected to be present for roughly 6 hours of contact time a week. The focus of these sessions will be mentorship, so those who cannot attend certain sessions will not miss out on course content. Each student will be allocated a mentor and be given remote support from the teaching team. There will be two hours of video based lectures a week that can be watched on demand at a time that best suits the learner.

Following the success of Northcoders intensive 12-week course launched in April 2016, the training school has now moved to Federation House in Manchester city centre.  The new premises offer 4,000 sq ft of workspace and includes a small lecture theatre.

Of the students that have so far graduated from Northcoders’ full-time Accelerate course, 91 per cent have become employed as software developers in a range of companies including web development agencies, technology consultancies and innovative startups. Last year Northcoders also fully funded nine scholarships for women to encourage more women into the sector. With Accelerate Flex, graduates receive the same one-to-one career support and are matched with hiring partners after the course ends.

Commenting on the new part-time course James Brooke, Co-founder of Northcoders said: “Our aim is to provide much needed tech talent to help assist businesses in the North thrive. Anyone of any age, gender, race or background can learn to code. We live in an incredibly diverse city and the life situations of people who live here are just as diverse.  Not everyone can commit to a full-time programme.  With this in mind, we’ve designed a course following the same curriculum that allows for flexible working and remote learning over a six-month period. We’ll continue to adapt to help support everyone who wants to get into the tech industry to do so.

“What has been particularly rewarding is the response from our graduates who really wanted to help mentor the Accelerate Flex students. We’re starting to create a community which is keen to share experience and knowledge with others which is fantastic to see as it fits so well with our core values.”  James added.

The ‘Accelerate Flex’ course costs £6,000 and places are limited to 14 people. Anyone applying for the course needs to pass a test to demonstrate a basic understanding of coding.  Deadline for applications is Monday 11 September 2017.
