Financial services group, Together, has launched its own Foodbank for the local community, collecting over 800 food donations in just two weeks.

Working in partnership with Stockport Foodbank, which is run by the Trussell Trust and provides emergency food for local people in crisis, the company donated over 250kg of goods to the branch, which is equivalent to 250 meals.

As well as acting as a food collection point, a team of Together colleagues spent the afternoon volunteering at Stockport Foodbank’s Hazel Grove distribution centre, helping to organise over 1,000kg of food donations, ready for the creation of individual food parcels.

Kevin Fisher, HR director at Together, said: “The success of the first ever Together Foodbank has been a great way to kick-start our community activity for 2017. The amount of donations from our generous colleagues surpassed our expectations, and it was fantastic to be able to present Stockport Foodbank with over 800 items.   We also had seven colleagues taking time away from the business to help make up the food parcels and this commitment to providing resource, as well as donations or fundraising, is a core part of our community programme.”

Nigel Tedford, project manager at Stockport Foodbank, said: “We received a significant amount of donations recently from Together which has benefited the support we can offer in and around the Stockport area. The new year is a busy period for any Foodbank service as many families are struggling financially after Christmas.

“We worked closely with Together to collect donations of items most urgently needed. We only had one toothbrush left in our warehouse when we received their items and now we have around 200. The amount of work done by the team in one afternoon would have taken in excess of a week using our usual amount of volunteers too, so giving their time as well as donations has truly helped.”

Local business network Marketing Stockport also supported the Together Foodbank, with members each bringing a donation with them to the monthly meeting, which was hosted at Together’s Cheadle offices.

The Together Foodbank, which will have regular drives throughout 2017, is part of the company’s ‘Let’s get caring’ scheme which focuses on giving back to the local community. It belongs to the broader ‘Let’s make it count’ initiative which spans charity, community and the environment.
