CONSTRUCTION accelerates at Great Homer Street as regeneration specialist St. Modwen signs The Gym Group to its £150 million ‘Project Jennifer’ scheme in Liverpool.

St. Modwen has agreed a lease with The Gym Group to occupy a 10,000 sq ft unit

at the new District Centre, leaving a single 6,000 sq ft unit left to let.

Founded in Hounslow in 2008 by former England squash player John Treharne, the brand currently operates 91 low-cost, high-spec gyms across the UK.

Offering a 24/7 service, The Gym Group is one of the UK’s fastest growing gym brands, and will bring the availability of around the clock fitness to North Liverpool.

Members can expect to find more than 170 pieces of premium equipment including cardio and resistance machines along with an extensive programme of free exercise classes. The gym is fully equipped with showers, changing rooms, vending machines and parking.

The gym forms part of the new District Centre currently under development by St. Modwen in partnership with Liverpool City Council, construction is at an advanced stage and set to complete this summer. The Gym Group will join retail occupiers B&M and Home Bargains who have already committed to the scheme.

Paul Batho, Projects Director at St. Modwen, said: “The Gym Group’s signing boosts the scheme’s offering by providing Great Homer Street with an affordable and accessible fitness facility. We welcome The Gym Group to the District Centre.

Jonathan Spaven, Property Director of the Gym Group, said: “The development of the District Centre is helping to revitalise North Liverpool and this site, which has excellent transport links and high footfall retail and leisure facilities in the immediate locality, provides the perfect location for us.”

“The Gym Group, pioneer of low-cost no contract 24/7 gyms in the UK, aims to make health and fitness accessible and affordable to all.  We want to attract a whole new leisure market and provide the local community with a high quality offering that does not compromise on quality, at an amazingly affordable price. As a business, we have invested significantly in our property portfolio and this latest addition helps deliver our ambitious growth plans for 2017.”

The ‘Project Jennifer’ scheme is on track to be completed in summer 2017. The major regeneration scheme, which includes a new Sainsbury’s supermarket, will create 1,000 new jobs and deliver £150m of investment.

Liverpool based Hitchcock Wright and Colliers are joint letting agents on the scheme and are currently marketing the remaining new retail space which is still available.
