Golf club celebrates 125th anniversary with fundraising drive

"We all know about Francis House and its wonderful work so were delighted to support such a deserving cause."
Paul Higgins, retiring captain

The south Manchester Golf Club raised a bumper £8,275 for one of Greater Manchester's best-loved charities.

Retiring Captain Paul Higgins, Lady Captain Moyra Levey and President Tommy Farrell made the donation to Francis House Children's Hospice to mark the end of their year in office.

The trio all had good reason to support Francis House as their chosen charity.

Tommy lives near the charity's headquarters on Parrs Wood Road in Didsbury where each year the families of 460 children and young people with life-limiting conditions receive respite and end-of-life care.

Moyra, from Bramhall, is a friend of John Andrew, a tireless fundraiser for the charity for many years. She auctioned off one of her prize possessions to raise funds - a book by the late golfer Seve Ballesteros which he signed for her in the 1980s.

Paul, from Sale, said: "We all know about Francis House and its wonderful work so were delighted to support such a deserving cause. We'd also like to thank everyone who supported us so generously and for making our year so memorable. "

Paul's son Sam was junior captain in 2017, completing an unprecedented family double for Withington, which is located on the banks of the River Mersey and is recognised as one of the north's leading golf courses.
