Cash Quest for Carers?
‘Bling’ it on says Bling, mascot for last year’s winners Sandcastle Waterpark, who made a £6k plus splash for Carers Trust Fylde Coast’s corporate challenge to fund a Young Carers Champion.
The cheeky monkey even squared up to the charity’s own mascot Rocco the carers donkey for some friendly sparring  as the three month quest began at the De Vere Herons Reach.
The aim is to raise as much money as is legally and ethically possible from a £50 refundable starter stake for the second year running.
Blackpool's rising social media chef and carer John Joyce (aka the Ice Cold Chef),  who learned to cook after his wife Bev was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis,  was quick to turn up the heat  on behalf of his Ice Cold Quest team, and challenger John Child,  managing director of the award winning water park http://www.sandcastle-waterpark.co.uk,  to  a fundraising duel.
The two Johns faced off over the trophy. “Touch it – for the first and last time,” said John C. “We aim to keep it....”  John J, who has council buddies backing him, is galvanising interest on social media and has  teamed up with another winner, Blackpool master butcher Nigel Wilkinson https://www.facebook.com/NigelWilkinsonButchers
Nigel’s “carers’ bangers” won the award for the most innovative fundraiser at the inaugural event.  Now Nigel and chef John, who has also enlisted support from Sainsbury’s, Blackpool,  have joined forces to create the perfect carers’ burger ...  the ‘Ice Cold Chef’ burgers include fresh peppers and cherry tomatoes are now on sale at the Holmfield Road store in aid of CQ4C.
After opening presentations by Hayley Kay, ambassador for the charity, Young Carers Champion Lauren Codling(who will be busking as her CQ4C challenge) and carers charity  http://www.carerstrustfyldecoast.org chief executive Michelle Smith it was time for all the teams to meet Rocco – and set about rocking the resort themselves to raise money.
Of the 24 teams competing six represent various sections of the charity and there’s also a big turn out from Blackpool Victoria Hospital.
Waterloo Primary School is also taking part – and hoping to encourage other schools to do so too. Recent figures reveal that one in 12 children are carers and often conceal that fact for fear of bullying or being thought different.
Blackpool’s Goalden Girls, local ladies in their 50s and 60s who run marathons and undertake epic walking challenges for charity, are now working on choreography for a 70s style flash mob dance to be held at Grosvenor G Casino, with the support of another team there, led by Sandra Davidson.
Goalden Girls founder Tricia Ellis explains: “We may not have made a lot of money with our Gangnam-style routine at Funny Girls last year but loved every minute thanks to choreographer Dan and the dancers and DJ Zoe.  So we thought we’d stick with dance this year. It’s our fifth birthday as a group and we all love the ‘70s and the element of surprise so a flash mob could be a great fundraiser.”
Participating teams include Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS End of Life team, Burtons Biscuits, DMS Whittington Military Team, Doug Smith, Goalden Girls, Grenfell Wednesday Craft Group, Grosvenor G Casino,  Ice Cold Quest (John Joyce and some council colleagues),  Medicx Chemist, Nigel Wilkinson Quality Meat Specialist, Palm Insurance, the Imperial Hotel, Sandcastle Waterpark, Victoria Hospital wards 14, 16 and 18  and A&E dept, Waterloo Primary Academy, Carers Trust Fylde Coast adult team, admin team, dementia project, hospital support project, young adult carers team and young carers team.
It’s still not too late to enter and do your bit to specifically help, with this project, children and teenagers who care, unpaid, for loved ones at home.  If your business, community group, school, health centre or home want to take part,  call (01253) 393748 or email jacqui.morley@carerstrustfyldecoast.org or tweet to  @blackpoolcarers @cashquest4carer
