Cheshire-based peer support support charity, SMILE Group, raised £1,700 at its pamper party fundraiser, to help families affected by perinatal mental illness.

Set up nearly six years ago by two mums with first-hand experience of perinatal mental illness, SMILE Group is a registered charity with peer support groups operating out of children’s centres in Macclesfield, Congleton and Sandbach.

Over 120 guests attended the wellbeing celebration at Fresh bar in Macclesfield, which featured 13 therapists from the local area, specialising in a range of treatments, from reiki to reflexology, manicures and deep tissue massage.

The event was supported by Cheshire-based, Journeys of Hope, co-founded by Ann Girling and Rachel Redshaw and marked the consolidation of the two organisations who will come together under the SMILE umbrella.

Attendees benefitted from short tutorials in mindfulness and yoga in the ‘Zen Pod’ to advise on how to ease stress and promote emotional wellbeing.

The evening raised more than £500 on the raffle, which including a host of prizes, from dining vouchers for Piccolino to a beer presentation pack from The Bollington Brewing Co., a Ted Baker satchel and a plethora of holistic treatments.

Commenting on the event, Sophie Kirk, project coordinator for SMILE Group, said: “We had a record turnout for the event, which was a fab opportunity to indulge in some wellbeing treatments as well as enjoy a sociable evening. It’s great to see growing awareness of perinatal mental illness and to be able to signpost appropriate support for families in Cheshire East.”

Rachel Redshaw, from Journeys of Hope added: “We were thrilled to come together with SMILE to host such a successful event. As two organisations with such aligned values, it seemed to be the perfect opportunity to mark our transition into one organisation, supporting families affected by perinatal mental illness.”
